Michael Phelps charged with drink driving, says he is ‘deeply sorry’ for his latest brush with the law

MICHAEL Phelps has apologised to fans after he was arrested and charged for speeding and drink driving in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday.

“I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down,“ the gold-medallist told his more than 1.5 million Twitter followers.

“I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility.”

The 29-year-old Olympic swimmer, who was previously arrested for a DUI in 2004, failed field sobriety tests after being stopped by authorities.

"Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver’s license and appeared to be under the influence,” the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement.

“He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests.”

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time with 18 gold medals to his name, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), excessive speed and crossing double lines in the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore.

Phelps retired from competitive swimming after the 2012 Olympics in London, but launched a comeback earlier this year, possibly looking at one more Olympics run.

This is the second time Phelps has been arrested for driving under the influence. He was arrested in 2004 after he competed at the Athens Olympics and was allegedly photographed using a marijuana pipe after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which resulted in a three-month ban from swimming.

He is hoping to compete in his fifth Olympics at Rio.

Home and Away star Jackson Gallagher was forced to run for his life in terrifying glacier rockfall in New Zealand

HOME and Away star Jackson Gallagher was forced to run for his life when he was caught up in two terrifying rockfalls on a New Zealand glacier during a recent ice-climbing expedition.

The 24-year-old actor, who plays Josh Barrett on the Channel Seven soap, and three other climbers were forced to duck for cover when massive boulders “the size of cars” came hurtling down the Franz Joseph glacier.

“It was a surreal experience, I was relieved no one was hurt,” Gallagher told News Corp.

“Something like this is a reminder of a nature’s unpredictability.”

As the rocks flew over their heads, he and his fellow climbers were forced to take cover at the edge of a designated helipad as they waited for the fall to subside.

But just minutes after the boulders stopped — when the climbers thought they were safe — a second fall was triggered.

A Channel Seven spokeswoman said Gallagher had travelled to New Zealand in July — when the incident took place — during a production break on Home and Away.

The Melbourne-born actor said he had  “an incredible time in New Zealand, it’s such a beautiful country.”

All climbers on the tour were uninjured in the rockfall.

Franz Josef Glacier Guides told the New Zealand Herald it conducted a full investigation after the incident.

It said the company operated only in areas on which a full external hazard assessment had been carried out.

Gallagher,an intrepid traveller and a keen photographer, recently held an exhibition in Sydney of photographs he took in Madagascar, with all proceeds going to a charity for orphans.

Buddy Franklin and Swans teammates drown their sorrows in “low key” gathering, Hawthorn head to Tasmania to continue post-grand final party

BUDDY Franklin and his Sydney Swans teammates are slowly coming to terms with the shock of their Grand Final loss to Hawthorn.

The 27-year-old star forward and teammates including Adam Goodes and Ted Richards gathered at a Balmain pub on Monday to drown their sorrows following their shattering 64-point loss to Hawthorn at the MCG on Saturday.

The players said it was a very “low-key” gathering.

“A couple of guys have dressed up, but it’s very low key,” full back Ted Richards told the Daily Telegraph.

“It’s nothing too special today. We’re still very disappointed. We had an opportunity and didn’t take it and there’s so much hard work so we’re very disappointed.

“It has been a big couple of days, you go from being a disciplined athlete to the last couple of nights which have been pretty hectic.”

Richards said the club would review the game as they prepare for next season.

“We will review the game, it will be hard to watch but it needs to be done,” he said.

Rob Mills apologises for posting “vile” and “homophobic” AFL grand final photo

GREASE star Rob Mills has apologised for allegedly posting a “vile” and “homophobic” photo on social media following Saturday’s AFL grand final.

The photo, which has since been deleted, was posted on Instagram after the grand final clash on Saturday and showed a Hawthorn Lego figurine simulating sex with a bent-over Sydney Swans character.

The image was captioned with the hashtags “#hilarious”, “#criticsaidwhaaaaaat”, “b2b” and “alwayshawthorn”.

The 32-year-old Australian entertainer has since apologised “unreservedly” for posting the photo.

The photo allegedly posted on social media by Mills, Source: Daily Mail Australia.

“In the excitement of celebrating the Hawks’ grand final win, I didn’t think about the homophobic implications of the image.

“This incident probably shows how entrenched inadvertent homophobia is in our culture.

“As a long-time supporter of the rights of Australia’s gay community, it’s not good enough and I’m ashamed if I have contributed to it, even in a small way,” he said in a statement on his website.
Mills has previously been an advocate for same-sex marriage in Australia.

He was a finalist on the first season of Australian Idol and most recently starred as grease-monkey Danny Zuko in the Australian production of Grease is the Word.
